Yoga Mats

The yoga mat is perhaps the most essential piece of yoga equipment. A good yoga mat provides cushioning and grip to allow you to hold poses comfortably without placing pressure on your hands and knees. Many mats these days are made of thick PVC or natural rubber and come in a variety of thicknesses from 1/8” to 1/4”. Thinner mats are best for hot yoga as they don't retain as much heat. For home practice, look for extra cushioning in 3/16” to 1/4” thick mats. Be sure to consider if you want a mat with added grip. Mats with texture provide traction to help you stay securely in place during poses. Another feature to consider is if the mat is portable, foldable or lightweight for easy transport to and from classes.

Yoga Blocks

Yoga Accessories include yoga blocks are rectangular blocks usually made of foam that provide support and assistance in yoga poses. They are used to help elevate the hips, boost the upper body or modify poses for greater or lesser intensity. Blocks come in varying heights from 3” to 6” and are useful tools for beginning students, seniors, pregnant women or those with injuries. They allow for safer arm balances by taking weight off the wrists. Blocks are also used underneath the hands or feet in forward folds to gently open the hips and hamstrings. Look for durable, non-slip blocks that provide just the right amount of lift for your needs and practice level.

Yoga Straps

For some yoga poses, flexibility may be limited due to tight hamstrings, hips or shoulders. A yoga strap is a long belt used to assist in poses that call for binding the opposite wrist to the foot. This allows you to experience the benefits and opening of the pose even if you cannot physically perform the complete version. Straps are also helpful for supported backbends. Look for straps between 6 to 10 feet in length made of cotton, nylon or polyester that are durable yet soft on the skin. Be sure to practice using straps in order to gain experience with proper positioning and form before relying on them too heavily. With time and regular practice, flexibility will improve naturally.

Yoga Towels

Yoga can cause sweating, so yoga towels are essential accessories to have on hand. Towels are useful for wiping your face and hands as well as providing extra grip during poses. Look for lightweight, quick-drying microfiber towels that are compact yet absorbent. When practicing hot yoga, a towel provides padding and cushions knees and elbows during floor based poses. For outdoor or gym practice, a small hand towel doubles as a face wipe and mat cleaner. Be sure to launder towels frequently to prevent the spread of bacteria. As an alternative, specialized yoga towels with non-slip properties on one side are also available.

Yoga Bolsters and Blocks

Bolsters and blocks provide support and padding during resting poses, Yin yoga practice and relaxation. Bolsters are cylindrical cushions usually filled with buckwheat hulls or foam that allow for reclined postures without strain on the lower back. They are useful for supported Child's Pose, Legs up the Wall pose and seated meditations. Look for wide, firm yet plush bolsters between 12 to 24 inches long. Yoga wedges and blocks can also double as inclined supports for the thighs, sacrum or head in restorative sequences. Choose high quality bolsters fully wrapped in cotton or wool to maintain shape after repeated use.

Yoga Clothing

For a comfortable yoga practice, clothing should allow free, uninhibited movement without being restrictive. Look for breathable fabrics like cotton or bamboo that wick away sweat. Capri leggings and fitted shorts provide coverage while yoga pants in material like luxtreme move with your body. Crop tops or fitted t-shirts work well for layering. For men, look for moisture-wicking shirts and shorts. Be sure clothing is not too loose or baggy as it can get caught in poses. Consider clothing in darker colors that hide sweat but bright colors work too if you want to showcase your practice! Yoga socks provide grip and padding for foot intensive poses.

Yoga Bags and Mats

To neatly transport yoga gear, a dedicated yoga bag is useful. Look for spacious, lightweight bags with separate compartments for shoes, towels, water bottles and other accessories. Rolling duffel style bags are convenient for studio practice. For home use, a simple tote works well too. To protect surfaces outside, invest in a durable yoga mat carrier with handles and closure. Folding yoga mats are great space savers that easily store in cars and gym lockers too. Mats with carrying straps are lightweight for outdoor hikes or beach yoga. Quality bags and carriers protect gear and keep everything organized for hassle-free yoga on the go.

Finding the right yoga accessories takes some trial and error based on your individual needs, style and budget. With the essential tools mentioned, you can optimize comfort, safety and enjoyment both at home and in classes. But most importantly, listen to your body and don't feel pressured into using props if basic versions of poses work well for you. Have fun exploring all the yoga accouterments available – they truly do enhance any yoga practice or routine.
